IELTS Test Description

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized English proficiency test that measures a candidate’s ability to communicate in English for study, work, or migration purposes. Over 11,000 organizations worldwide accept IELTS scores, including universities, immigration authorities, employers, and professional bodies.

Test Versions

1. IELTS Academic

   • For students applying to universities or professional registration.

   • Focuses on academic language and skills.

2. IELTS General Training

   • For migration to English-speaking countries or training programs.

   • Focuses on everyday and workplace English.

Test Format

IELTS assesses four key skills:

1. Listening – 4 sections, 40 questions (about 30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time for paper-based test).

2. Reading – 3 sections, 40 questions (60 minutes).

3. Writing – 2 tasks (60 minutes).

4. Speaking – Face-to-face interview with an examiner (11–14 minutes).

Scoring

• Each skill is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9.

• The overall band score is the average of the four component scores.

• Band requirements vary:

  • Academic: Universities may require Band 6.0–7.5+.

  • Migration: Immigration authorities (e.g., Canada, UK, Australia) may require Band 6.0–8.0 depending on visa type.
